Former slaughterhouse could become market

AN INDOOR market could be housed inside the former slaughterhouse if one deputy gets his way – and others have the 'guts and imagination' to support it.

Mike Hadley is to launch a requete asking Treasury and Resources to grant a lease to Commerce and Employment to set up a company akin to the Dairy.

Then the building, which sits idle, could be transformed into a 'vibrant indoor greengrocer' market.

The bonuses of such a scheme were plenty, Deputy Hadley said, and it seemed a no-brainer. The only thing stopping it was the idea getting caught up in bureaucracy.

'Someone suggested that Commerce and Employment produce a report on it, but that would take 18 months. Subject to some cosmetic changes, such as the toilet, there could be a market there tomorrow,' said Deputy Hadley.

'It would enhance it as a destination, become a tourist attraction, preserve its character and become a traditional market, people like markets.

'A lot of people cannot afford the overheads to run a shop, but would like to run a market stall. The building has a lot of potential.'
