Unit drink price 'will save lives'

THREE deaths a year could be cut by minimum alcohol unit pricing and the tough stance could start to tackle some of the advertising that bombards young people, medical officer of health Dr Stephen Bridgman has said.

Dr Bridgman, who claimed that a further 50 illnesses a year could be prevented by the proposed policy, said it was a critical part of the 2015-2020 Drug and Alcohol Strategy.

He said that it would help the island set an example to younger people and by tackling cheap drink offers in shops, it would go some way to help tackle advertising for booze.

Dr Bridgman, pictured, said that further strong action to address the harms of marketing would be better coming as a united British Isles effort, making it more practical to introduce changes.
