Waste charge rises will bring more fly tipping – constable

FLY-TIPPING is only going to get worse at Saints Bay, according to one parish official who was 'staggered' by the amount of rubbish dumped in the area.

St Martin's senior constable Gerry Tatterstall was joined yesterday afternoon by PC Simon Hamon, from the neighbourhood policing team.

They were checking the area after a washing machine was reported as having been discarded near the bottom of the cliff.

Within five minutes, PC Hamon and Mr Tatterstall had found 11 items, including an old pram, some children's toys, a hedge strimmer and part of a lawnmower.

'Even walking along the cliff path opposite here, the idyllic view is completely spoiled when you look below eye level and see the amount of rubbish that has simply been dumped in these beautiful surroundings,' said Mr Tatterstall.

'The key issue here is a lack of awareness. I think maybe people don't know exactly what they can and cannot take to Longue Hougue.

'If this does continue, however, we will have no problem naming and shaming individuals who are caught in the act.

'Now the parish truck will have to come down and fetch everything we have gathered, taking vital parish funds away from where they are really needed.'
