Twitter row breaks out after deputy's Holocaust remarks

DEPUTY Elis Bebb has come under fire following comments he made about Guernsey's role in the wartime treatment of the Jews.

In Saturday's edition of the Guernsey Press, Deputy Bebb was featured in an article about his plans to hold a special local service to honour the victims of Nazi rule on Holocaust Memorial Day, on Tuesday.

The article contained this quote from Deputy Bebb: '...here in Guernsey we deport the three women to Auschwitz.

This struck a nerve with local man Neil Inder, who tweeted a picture of the pull-out quote and accompanied it with this message: 'Factually incorrect again Elis Bebb blames islanders. Code of conduct for this so-called representative.'

In the ensuing conversation, Deputy Bebb stood up to criticism from various respondents, some of whom asked for an apology. He insisted he was not trying to point blame or create scapegoats but that it was time for the island to examine carefully its role and actions during some of its darkest days. He even provided the link to the code of conduct page.
