Recycling rate drops

HEADLINE recycling rates have dropped, figures from Public Services have shown.

The department's quarterly waste report on the 12 months up to September 2014 attributed the decrease from 47.4% to 47.1% to a significant drop in green waste, which it said could fluctuate significantly due to factors such as the weather.

However it added it was delighted to see an upturn in dry recyclables due to encouraging figures for kerbside recycling.

Public Services said by the end of its first year the new initiative could have contributed 2% to overall headline rates, provided it hit projections.
