Since 2009, and excluding last year, the island has spent more than £3m. in prescriptions alone, figure show.

And this excludes drugs which are used to combat complications associated with type 2 diabetes, such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure.

Diabetes nurse consultant Anne Kinch said 2,500 islanders have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and, although it was manageable, it did increase the risk of other serious complications.
