Jersey challenge to fishing controls

A JERSEY fisherman has launched a legal challenge against the States in a bid to lift 'unreasonable' fishing restrictions imposed on him in Guernsey waters.

The long-running legal battle returned to court yesterday when 49-year-old fisherman Steve Channing appealed against conditions imposed on him by Commerce and Employment, imposed under the island's Guernsey's current fishing licence regime which controls the three- to 12-mile limit.

It is the second time the States has ended up in a legal battle in attempts to control fishing within local waters.

Advocate Gordon Dawes, representing Mr Channing, claimed that the department had failed to take into account his whole fishing track record when assessing his application and imposing heavy restrictions.
