Width and emission taxes pulled

WIDTH and emissions taxes have been withdrawn.

Published

States members today narrowly rejected Environment's attempt to lessen its proposed charges in a bid to save the key funding element of its transport strategy, which eventually prompted it to withdraw the law for a new tax on the first registration of vehicles.

Treasury and Resources also withdrew its motion which would have sent Environment away to investigate reintroducing motor tax.

It means urgent talks will take place on how to fund the strategy.

Another funding mechanism, paid parking, which has already been agreed in principle, still has to return to the States.

Environment's amendment to its width and emissions law was lost by 23 votes to 21.
