Cobo centre 'will benefit many'

MANY community groups will benefit from the completion of the Cobo Community Centre and that is why islanders should continue to donate towards the project, a mother of a woman who devoted her free time to Girl Guiding has said.

Kath Mauger and her husband Alan have supported the project since day one after their daughter Michelle Brouard, who passed away in 2011, left a substantial donation towards the cause in her will.

Mrs Brouard, who was just 55 when she lost her battle with cancer, had spent hundreds of hours at the St Matthew's Church Hall, which is being replaced by the community centre.

Mrs Mauger said she was 'thrilled' to see the project now taking shape.

'We hope people will keep contributing to the funds,' she said.

'We would like to see the building finished. It would be lovely to see it open.'

She said there had been a high demand for the former hall and said the new centre would be well used. 'Michelle would have loved to see it being built,' said Mrs Mauger.

'She used to do so much there and obviously, with her donation, it was something that she really wanted to happen.'

Mrs Brouard started as a Brownie at the church hall when she was seven and then went on to be a Guide. After attending university, she became the leader of her own Brownie pack at the building.

She also attended Sunday school at the hall and helped out there when she was an adult.

Her family has a long history with the church and the hall. Mr Mauger is a former church warden and Mrs Mauger had previously held a Women's Fellowship group at the hall for 24 years.

The build of the new centre is half way through and it is hoped the new building will be wind- and water-tight by the end of February. If all continues to schedule, work will be complete by July, ready for opening in September.

Those behind the £1.6m. project are launching one last fundraising push to secure the rest of the funds needed.

So far, the project team is heading towards the £900,000 mark in terms of fundraising – a further £700,000 is needed.

The Guernsey Press is media partner for the centre.

Donations towards the project can be made at any branch of HSBC, using the sort code 40-22-25 and account number 44126610.

Cheques can also be made payable to 'Cobo Community Centre' and sent to Pauline Mahy, Les Palmiers, Grandes Rocques, Castel, GY5 7FR.

A bond scheme is also available for anyone who would like to make an investment or who is able to provide a regular standing order donation.
