THERE will be no extra bank holiday this year to mark Liberation Day, deputies have decided.

States members yesterday rejected a move, led by Matt Fallaize, to make Friday 8 May a public bank holiday.

A proposal within the requete, which would have allowed an extra weekday public holiday in future whenever 9 May fell on a weekend, was also defeated when the recorded vote was tied 20-20, with seven deputies absent.

Deputy Fallaize said he stood by cause and hoped that it was an idea that Culture and Leisure could pursue.

'I do hope they reflect and find a way to ensure a public holiday is held on a weekday every year Liberation Day falls at the weekend,' he said.
