More than £50,000 was raised from the annual event organised by the Lions Club and the Guernsey Round Table – one of the highest amounts raised in its 38-year history.

Autism Guernsey was also a principal beneficiary along with the CI Air Search, which has received £22,500.

Chief Pilot Mike Tidd said the money would be put towards the replacement of the Lions' Pride aircraft, which crashed in Jersey during a rescue mission in November 2013.

It is currently using an interim aircraft that has the tail and fins of the Lion's Pride attached.

'We are very grateful for this donation, which brings us within our £800,000 target towards our replacement aircraft,' he said.

'We wish to thank every swimmer for their efforts and to the organisers for selecting us as a beneficiary.'
