Vehicles on pavement 'an accident waiting to happen'

WALKING to school when vehicles are mounting the pavement is an 'accident waiting to happen', concerned parents have said, as options to make the area around Hautes Capelles Primary safer are being considered.

Many walking their children were particularly supportive of the removal of an earth bank, which runs alongside a field near the entrance to Les Canus, so that either the road or pavement could be widened.

At a public meeting last week, about traffic issues in the area, the Environment Department's active travel unit also presented two other options involving one-way systems.

While parents were not keen to see either of the two systems introduced, they all remained adamant that something needed to be done to make the area safer.

Jane Hyman was taking her granddaughter, Chloe Guille, to school. She walks most days along Route des Capelles.

'My arm has been knocked by a wing mirror and to be honest it is like an accident waiting to happen,' Mrs Hyman said.

'It needs to be made safer because it is dangerous.

'I think removing the bank would be a very good idea because at least then we would have more space to walk.'

Chloe said she really enjoyed walking to school.

'Sometimes the cars do get a bit close so it would be good if they could do something to make it safer.'
