Leale's Yard could be one answer to housing crisis

HUNDREDS of new social housing units could be built on Leale's Yard, as preliminary talks have been taking place between the Housing Department, Guernsey Housing Association and the Channel Islands Co-operative Society.

The news follows criticism that not enough is being done to build affordable housing, which is forcing islanders to leave Guernsey.

GHA chief executive Steve Williams said the Leale's Yard talks were at an early stage, but he was hopeful something could be drawn up. 'We have noted our interest in the site,' he said.

Channel Island Co-operative CEO Colin Macleod said the society was in very early talks with the association to try and understand the island's residential needs.

'We expect a more residentially-led view could be put forward in the future,' he said

Mr Williams said this site could help reduce the shortfall inland.

'It is a sizeable site, so it could be mixed use, with sheltered housing, partial ownership and rental,' he said.

The site is zoned for mixed residential and commercial use.

Mr Williams said the GHA had not drawn up plans yet, but that there would be plenty of room for a big development.

'There is the potential for 250-plus properties,' Mr Williams said.
