Prison staff listen in to 10% of prisoners' calls

IT WOULD be 'foolish to suggest with absolute certainty' there could never be a repeat of an incident at Guernsey's prison where an indecent assault victim was phoned from a prison cell by her attacker, Home minister Peter Gillson has said.

The minister said the prison, however, was not complacent about the risks and had a robust set of measures in place that made it highly likely that anyone abusing the system would be caught and punished appropriately.

Both Deputy Gillson and prison governor Dave Matthews also spoke of the benefits of allowing prisoners to make calls from their cells and it was revealed that about 10% of calls were listened to by prison staff every evening.

It followed the jailing at the Royal Court of Jorge Fonseca, 24, who admitted indecent assault and attempting to pervert the course of justice by pressing his victim to drop the charges.
