Her full schedule has not yet been announced, but she will be in Guernsey for the morning of 9 May, before going on to Jersey.

The timing coincides with the inter-school relay race along the seafront, the Liberation Service at the Town Church and the Liberation Church Parade.

Culture and Leisure Minister Mike O'Hara said it was exciting to have the Countess return to the island.

'We are really lucky to get a royal visitor, as there are so many commitments for the Royal Family currently,' he said.

Sophie, Countess of Wessex, will be representing The Queen at the 70th anniversary of Liberation.

Bailiff Richard Collas said the island has happy memories of the Countess's previous visit to Guernsey in 2009 when, among other functions, she and His Royal Highness, the Earl of Wessex, opened St Sampson's High and Le Murier.
