Public sector pension actions are defended

GUERNSEY could not have closed the current public sector pension scheme to new entrants earlier, Chief Minister Jonathan Le Tocq has insisted.

He was asked by Deputy Matt Fallaize whether the option had been considered by the Policy Council.

Figures released by the Policy Council show that of the current 5,000 pension scheme members, 25.1% were recruited between May 2012 and today and 24.6% between May 2008 and May 2012.

As the States struggles to instigate reform of the scheme, some have suggested closing it to new members earlier would not only have saved money but also made making changes now easier.

Around 10 years ago, the committee then responsible for pay talks – chaired by Deputy Le Tocq, who is pictured, – was directed to review public sector pensions.
