States back annual parking clock charge

ALL MOTORISTS will have to pay to park in Guernsey after the States dramatically backed a move to charge for annual parking clocks yesterday.

Less than 24 hours after a failed attempt to throw out Environment's controversial 60p-an-hour paid parking tariff for long stay in Town, a last-minute amendment by Deputies Mary Lowe and Al Brouard saw the U-turn.

Politicians instead backed making every motorist pay between £30 and £50 per annum for their disk parking clocks – and this will only be brought in once the Environment Department has proven that the bus service is fit for purpose and also requires another debate on the details.

After the vote 28-16 for the chargeable clocks, a frustrated deputy Environment minister Barry Brehaut said deputies should be commended for being the most indecisive States ever.

How they voted:

In favour of paid-for parking clocks: Deputies Le Clerc, Lester Queripel, St Pier, Stewart, Gillson, Le Pelley, Trott, Dave Jones, Laurie Queripel, Lowe, Spruce, Collins, Green, Paint, Adam, Perrot, Brouard, Wilkie, De Lisle, Inglis, Soulsby, Sillars, Luxon, O'Hara, Kuttelwascher, Langlois and Alderney representatives Jean and McKinley. 28

Against: Deputies Gollop, Sherbourne, Conder, Bebb, Ogier, Le Lievre, Duquemin, Dorey, Le Tocq, James, Burford, Quin, Hadley, Harwood, Brehaut, Robert Jones. 16.

Absent: Deputies Domaille (visiting family in Australia) Fallaize (who has been ill) Storey (who is a long-term absentee from the States due to health issues).
