Seafront single-lane system could extend to Albert Pier

PLANS have been submitted to extend the new single-lane traffic system on the Town seafront to the traffic lights at the bus terminus.

But critics have warned this latest proposal will cause traffic jams.

Environment announced last month that it planned to reduce the two-lane southbound road between the Crown Pier and Town Church to just one lane to make the area safer.

But in a revised planning application made as part of Guernsey Harbours' decision to move where cruise ship passengers come ashore, the single lane will now extend as far as the pedestrian lights so that there is a wider walkway between Albert Pier and the crossing to cope with more people.

An Environment Department spokesman said the existing two lanes would be maintained between the filter at the Town Quay/Fountain Street junction and the entrance to the Albert Pier.

St Peter Port Constable Dennis Le Moignan and Vale deputy Mary Lowe – who is opposed to plans to change the Albert Pier – are both concerned about the changes.

Mr Le Moignan said he thought this would have a big impact on traffic.

'It will cause jam-ups,' he said.
