Pier parking loss may be kept to ship visits

ALBERT Pier parking changes could be limited to days when cruise ships visit, under proposals being worked on by several States departments.

Originally it had been planned that 34 spaces on the pier would be moved or lost between March and October, along with 24 spaces and an unloading bay on South Esplanade.

Alternatives for most of these lost spaces had been proposed.

However, staff are now looking at keeping the re-allocated spaces and also re-opening those on the Albert Pier and South Esplanade, except on the 71 days when cruise ships are visiting.

A Policy Council spokesman said there were still a number of logistical issues to be decided, but that a cross-departmental working party was looking to resolve these.

'We have clarified the legal position of swapping parking areas to coach parks and back on an ad hoc basis and that may be possible,' he said.

'So we are now working on the logistics of how we inform the public of the status of the area on any given day, how we demarcate the area, and how we remove illegally-parked cars from the area if and when that is necessary.

'These are genuine issues, and there may still be some compromises required, but we are fairly confident we can find a solution.'
