But the landowner has said no firm decision has been made about the site's future.

The concerns centre around the marshy fields to the east of Le Villocq Estate.

Landowner Island Development Ltd tried and failed to get the land classed for housing at the last planning inquiry in 2004.

In the latest planning inquiry residents are not taking any chances.

A number have submitted representations to the inquiry, backing the Environment Department's proposals to have the land classed as an agricultural priority area and an area of biodiversity importance.

Stuart Bush has lived on the estate for many years and represented the estate at the last planning inquiry.

He has submitted his views this time, stating that it was important to retain the green space.

'Every time there is a planning inquiry they try to get permission,' he said.

'So we are very alert to it.'
