Number of social carers for children 'must double'

GUERNSEY needs to double the number of social workers who are helping children as the current post-holders are dealing with up to twice the number they should be, Health and Social Services has said.

It comes after A soon-to-be-published review found that some of the island's most vulnerable children are not getting the level of care they need from the States.

Late last year, Health and Social Services chief officer Dr Carol Tozer, pictured, brought in independent consultant Ruby Parry to review children's services.

'When I came in I spent some time meeting frontline staff, but also reading a few case files on children, which revealed while social workers have a very good sense of the needs of the children, you could see we were struggling to provide, in some case, the response those kids needed,' said Dr Tozer.

The department has identified the need for an extra £221,000 initially to be spent every year in the area, plus a one-off £71,000, to implement an action plan to address the concerns about how children are helped by the States.
