Islanders to have their say on HSSD's future

THE future of Guernsey's health and social care system will include a public consultation.

An investigation is currently under way comparing spending in the island with other places to see whether money could be saved in some areas or needs to be increased in others, or if there were better ways of delivering services.

It follows continual problems with Health and Social Services meeting its budget and the minister is now warning that Guernsey needs to get it right to avoid more boards having to resign over spending issues in the decades to come.

The public consultation is something deputy minister Heidi Soulsby has pushed for.

'The benchmarking is looking at the services, how much we spend on them, how that compares to other ways of doing it, how others are doing it, then we have to look at our priorities in terms of services,' said Deputy Soulsby.

'After that we are going to have to go to the population and say what do you think?'
