Residents object to concrete chamber

'SAVE the Belle Greve view' was the rallying cry from a group of concerned neighbours who yesterday warned that an imposing new concrete chamber would affect thousands of islanders.

Loss of view, unpleasant odours and flooding are just some of the concerns raised by the growing group of residents, dismayed by the plans and calling on more islanders to register their objections, including the many commuters, cyclists and those other people who travelled past.

As part of the Belle Greve waste water programme, Guernsey Water has submitted the application to construct a new chamber next to the Red Lion slipway, which would be about 13 metres wide and could rise two metres above the low wall to the north of the existing slipway.

However, Martyn and Sarah Sarre are among concerned neighbours wanting a complete rethink.

'It is the size, the smell and the loss of the view,' said Mr Sarre.

Monty Waterman, who lives by the Halfway, said he would be able to see the 'monstrosity' and his daughter Michelle Waterman lives opposite the Red Lion slipway. 'The last thing they all want to see is a concrete "German bunker",' he said.
