'We will open if the public want it'

TWO major retailers have said they will open on a Sunday if that is what the public wants.

After the release of a Commerce and Employment survey on Sunday trading, in which showed nearly two-thirds of respondents supported were favour of the idea and more than half of retailers said they would support the move, Alliance managing director Andrew Bagot said there were arguments on both sides of the oft-repeated debate.

If his customers wanted to shop on a Sunday, he would most likely oblige them but an extra day's trading would not necessarily equate to an extra day's profit.

Stan Brouard managing director Rodney Brouard, pictured, said his garden centre would start opening on a Sunday does not currently open on a Sunday, but if a new cafe was approved that would allow it to do so. However, Customer opinion would be the determining factor, he added.
