Sacc looks at options for fewer deputies

POSSIBLE changes to the number of deputies elected to each district are being investigated before next year's general election.

The States Assembly and Constitution Committee is looking into the issue, in the event that the number of deputies is cut under proposals due from the States Review Committee.

Sacc chairman Matt Fallaize said that, even if the number of States members remained the same, it might still be necessary to make some change in the seats per district.

'The committee needs to give some thought to how seats may be allocated or reallocated between the electoral districts in the event that the States Review Committee proposes – and if the States agree – a reduction in the number of States members with effect from 2016,' he said.

'We have, therefore, obtained the latest population figures per electoral district and we are assessing what would be the fairest allocation of seats if the States decide to reduce the number of members to a number in the 30s or low 40s or indeed if they decide to keep the number of members at 45 – and even that last possibility may necessitate some change in seats per district because of population changes since the original allocation of seats 12 years ago.'
