'No lives will be put at risk'

MOVING coastguard calls to the Joint Emergency Services Control Centre will provide greater resilience and manpower to deal with major incidents and will not put lives at risk, the harbour master has said.

Captain Chad Murray said that while initial calls would go through the JESCC, responsibility for search and rescue operations would remain with Guernsey Harbours. 'The only difference is that when calls come through, they will firstly go through to the control centre before being passed directly on to the search and rescue coordinator.

'It will still be me and my team that will respond appropriately to an emergency,' he said. 'There is absolutely no risk to lives at sea.'

Plans to move calls to the JESCC came under attack from the St Peter Port lifeboat station's operational team.
