Town statues cleaned to look as good as new

SCAFFOLDING covering statues honouring the dead of the Boer War and Prince Albert has been removed, unveiling the newly-cleaned structures.

Specialists spent a week working on the pieces on The Quay and St Julian's Avenue.

The marble Boer War statue was installed in 1905, but the stone has suffered serious weathering.

Prince Albert has also had a facelift, with the 1863 bronze statue being repatinated with hot and cold wax.

The statue had turned green as the metal oxidised, but the work has returned him to a bronze colour.
