Union representatives said their counterparts from the Policy Council had refused to get back around the table and withdraw plans to try to force pension reforms through the Royal Court, which are set to be debated by the States next week.

Potentially thousands of workers are expected to turn out for today's protest, starting from 11.30am and culminating in a rally at St James from 1pm.

Association of States Employees Organisation chairman Martin MacIntyre, confirmed its 11th hour offer had failed this week, ahead of the unprecedented protest.

'We have held out an olive branch again, but they have not accepted our offer for more talks,' said Mr MacIntryre, who is also president of the Association of Guernsey Civil Servants.

ASEO vice-chairman Chris Torode was confident public sector workers, of varying professions, would turn out.
