LIVING next to the southern compound while the airport runway was being refurbished made a family's life hell, the Royal Court was told yesterday.

Ian and Catherine Birnie, who live at Rue de L'Eglise, Forest, are suing the States of Guernsey for £524,274 for general damages and losses they say they incurred.

Mr Birnie, pictured, told the court how dust, light and noise pollution forced them to move into much smaller rented accommodation from August 2012 to January last year.

'Unless you lived with us it's difficult to say how we suffered, suffered, suffered,' he said. 'It was horrific and our family life has been destroyed.'

The couple were also suing the main contractor, Lagan Construction, but the court was told yesterday that that claim had been dismissed.
