An amendment by Deputy Elis Bebb, pictured, to investigate a ban on smoking from outside public buildings was defeated by 34 votes to 12.

Deputy Bebb said it had been a very strange debate, given deputies then went on to back the report's proposals to ban smoking from children's playgrounds, States buildings and outdoor eating areas.

HSSD minister Paul Luxon said he supported the idea but said it was the wrong time for his department to pursue it.

The overall Tobacco Strategy was approved meaning that the price of cigarettes will increase by RPIX plus 5%. Deputies supported plans for a ban on smoking in cars when children are present, and in playgrounds.

A ban on smoking in outdoor eating areas and allowing HSSD to work towards plain packaging of cigarettes were also backed.
