Banish food waste is best answer – PSD

PUBLIC SERVICES said it was best not to produce food waste in the 'first place', when facing questions over the possibility of higher bills after scrapping a key element of its waste strategy.

Minister Scott Ogier revealed in the States that the department would not be progressing a business case for an in-vessel composting facility, as part of the strategy.

Instead PSD will now investigate the possibility of exporting food waste to an off-island facility, but has said that another option could be households disposing of it in general rubbish.

When asked by the Guernsey Press whether simply putting food waste in black bags would increase the anticipated charges facing homes – given that PSD would be charging more for the black bags than recycling bags – the department said the best option was actually not to produce it.

'The future bag charges will simply reflect the real cost of dealing with the island's waste,' it said.

'They will ensure there is a link between how much waste a household produces, and how much they pay for it to be dealt with.

'Whether food waste is included in a black bag or collected separately, there is a cost for dealing with it.

'The best option is not to produce it in the first place.

'That not only avoids the cost of treatment or disposal, it can also save a lot of money by reducing the amount of food we buy only to end up in the bin.'
