States 'risks making its single most costly strategic error'

REBUILDING La Mare de Carteret schools before deciding the future of the 11-plus would run the risk of the 'single most costly strategic planning mistake in the history of States capital projects', former chief minister Lyndon Trott has warned.

The St Sampson's deputy has reiterated his warning that a clear decision must be made on selection, before taking one on the proposed £60m. rebuild.

He raised the matter during last year's States debate on the La Mare rebuild and then again last month, before Treasury joined the calls for the project to be put on hold until a decision is made on the future of secondary and tertiary education.

As the rebuild row intensifies some have blamed actions of previous States. Deputy Trott said he despaired at the money wasted by the States, by failing to deal with critical questions before making major decisions like this.

'All this navel-gazing is well and good, but there is only one group of people responsible for the current state of affairs,' he said. 'That responsibility rests squarely at the Education Department's door.

'The Education Department needs to be honest and admit that mistakes they have made and must be remedied, by getting our collective decision-making back on track.

'If they don't we run the risk of making the single most costly strategic planning mistake in the history of States capital projects – and that's saying something.'
