Cash-strapped islanders ask for help with £2.5m. debt

ISLANDERS needed help to repay around £2.5m. of debt last year as Guernsey's Citizens Advice Bureau was hit by just over 2,500 money-related enquiries, latest figures show.

The CAB annual report, released today, shows that the most common debt people asked for help with were unsecured loans and credit or store cards, and these were generally of the highest value.

Other common debts included family loans, medical and utility bills.

Bureau manager Kate Raleigh said one of the emerging concerns was the number of people with little prospect of clearing debt, including pensioners.

'People have been lent money and it is hard to see how there will ever be a time they will be able to pay it off,' she said.

Money skills coordinator Katherine Tetlow said debt and serious financial worries were constant problems facing islanders every year, particularly when levels of disposable income fell.
