Cigarette display ban sees shop turn to alcohol

ALCOHOL will be sold at the Bridge Candy Shop for the first time, as it seeks to boost revenue following a change in the tobacco licensing law.

From Monday, retailers are no longer able to display cigarettes, for which they used to receive money from tobacco companies. Candy Shop co-owner Daphne Brouard said this, combined with another element of the law, which meant under-18s had to be supervised by those over that age, had resulted in a sharp increase in staffing costs.

'That has increased our wage bill considerably, I estimated by about £5,000 a year. We relied a lot on students, and now we have had to phase them out,' she said.

'We thought that as we are losing money from not displaying cigarettes any more, we would recoup that through selling alcohol.'
