AS Education gears up to rebuild La Mare de Carteret, more than 500 people have signed a petition to support Les Beaucamps High School.

The States finally gave their backing to the redevelopment of La Mare on Friday, on the condition that the future of secondary education and the 11-plus was debated by March.

Deputies have also left the option open to allow for a 600- or 900-pupil high school.

The public is concerned that the most recently built school – Les Beaucamps – could close if the larger option is adopted as there would be more school places than pupils.

The petition, which appears to have been set up by a student, states that Les Beaucamps is lovely.

'We have amazing teachers and students here, so why close us down? Our teachers are already stressed about keeping the students focused and getting exam results up. So we don't want them thinking that their job might be gone in the morning.'
