Gatwick monopoly 'is key to profitability for Aurigny'

AURIGNY'S continued monopoly of the Gatwick route is key to the profitability of the States-owned airline and plans to break even, former managing director Malcolm Hart has said.

Mr Hart equally warned Guernsey had no way of controlling airport slots, like those at Gatwick, without the government owning the airline.

During a Scrutiny hearing yesterday, Mr Hart said Aurigny's lack of competition on Gatwick should support the current targets to break even by the close of 2016.

'A monopoly of Gatwick is a key element to that,' he said.

Mr Hart's calls to protect the Gatwick slots came as Commerce and Employment minister Kevin Stewart, at the hearing, echoed the critical importance of the London route.
