Moves to scrap Town layout gets backing

A GROUNDSWELL of support is gathering behind moves to force Environment to scrap its 'daft', 'dangerous' and 'manic' changes to the Town Quay layout.

Taxi drivers, HGV firms, business owners, politicians and motorists are tightening the pressure on Environment to U-turn on the changes which saw the south-bound route reduced to one lane and a courtesy crossing enhanced by a pedestrian island. If not, Deputy Mary Lowe said she would force the matter to go to the States, if the new trial arrangement remained by the end of the summer, but people within the community are calling on the department to act sooner and before an accident forces their hand.

The new layout has been blamed for major Town congestion and former Environment minister Roger Domaille warned that having a dedicated left-hand lane for Crown Pier car park and asking other motorists to 'merge' with the right-hand lane was an accident waiting to happen.

Roy Le Page, who has been a taxi driver for seven years, was among those to slam the new set-up and congestion it caused, saying it was increasing fares for customers.
