Retailers fear road changes are driving business away

ISLANDERS are avoiding shopping in Town because of the controversial changes to the Town Quay, retailers warned yesterday, as they feared business would continue to drop throughout the summer.

Town traders said they had already started to notice a dip in local custom because of the new layout, which Environment minister Yvonne Burford revealed on Tuesday would stay in place until the end of the summer.

Soundtrack owner Barry Dodd was deeply concerned.

'This idea that cruise passengers are an asset is wrong. We are down 50% in trade when the cruise passengers come in.

'We are losing trade from our local customers and St Peter Port needs to go back to the way it was before.

'If I lose my local trade I would be out of business,' he said.

'Somebody needs to do something now – rather than revitalise the Town, it is only going to devitalise it.'
