Fall in day-trippers 'having an impact on tourism'

GUERNSEY 'needs to do more' to attract and enable day visitors to come to the island, according to one tourism business.

The comments come after a recent VisitGuernsey report comparing the first quarters of 2015 and 2014 found that while the number of visitors staying for more than one night had increased by 7.4%, there has been 2,000 fewer day visits – business and leisure combined – 7,550 compared to 9,550 last year.

The owner of one tourism site, Guernsey Candles, said the lack of day visitors was affecting their business.

'Even though the statistics say that there are more staying visitors, the lack of day-trippers does have a negative effect on a business like this,' said Marion Martel.

'We certainly haven't seen an increase in customers, which is always the case when tourism does pick up.

'Another issue is encouraging people to really explore the island and spend money at places like this when they are here.'
