Public survey to define the States framework for change

CUTTING the number of States sites and increasing online services are a few of the options for islanders, as part of a survey they are asked for the first time what they think of about government services released today.

The aim is that changes – shaped by the new survey – will be delivered within 10 years and will help the island cope with a falling working population and tightening budgets.

Civil servants and politicians have already been asked for their opinions in two earlier surveys. The latest – released today – casts the net wider.

States chief executive Paul Whitfield said it was vital that all islanders had their say.

'They are our customers, so we must find out what they need and how they want it delivered,' he said.

There are around 5,500 States employees, spread over 200 sites such as the airport and schools.

Around £360m. is spent every year, which covers everything from cliff path maintenance to street lighting.

'What's important for me is to understand whether people are pleased with the services they get, where we can improve and how easy it is do business with the States of Guernsey,' Mr Whitfield said.
