Jim and the late Peggy Wilkinson set up the Wilkinson Trust and have now given the seven- figure sum to the University of Southampton in a bid to realise its goal of building a world-leading research centre in cancer immunology and immunotherapy.

Jim Wilkinson, pictured, said he would rather see the money put towards a good cause than sitting in a bank account.

'I decided to donate it because I had the money, and at my age I probably won't spend it.

'I will visit the centre once it is built. It would be strange if I didn't.
