Sam Howard, 16, pictured, was left with a broken left wrist, needed her right eyebrow glued as well as suffering grazes to her knees and hips and had sore ribs after the incident, which happened on Wednesday morning.

The teenager, who described the seconds before she collided with the vehicle shortly after 8am – said she thought the worst as she realised she was going to be hit.

'I thought I was going to die,' she said. 'I thought "this is going to happen" and tried to brace myself.'

Wednesday's collision follows two fatal accidents along the seafront cycle path within the last four years.
