Motor tax plans stalled

TREASURY will not bring forward plans for an annual motor tax to help the Environment Department fund its beleaguered transport strategy.

Environment had hoped that T&R would do so in an effort to raise £6m. which could fund the strategy, but declined to do so itself because it believed it would assist Treasury in trying to diversify the tax base.

While T&R still believes this would be a better way of funding the strategy, it will not be asking the States for the tax to be re-introduced.

Minister Gavin St Pier, pictured, said this was the wrong debate for such a proposal.
