The Guernsey player lost in the third set after a match lasting 2 hours 15 minutes but won plaudits from around the globe for her bid to topple the winner of 20 grand slams.

After the match Williams, the five-time Wimbledon, admitted she had almost been out of the tournament and it was her toughest match on centre court.

Watson was distraught. 'I was two points away from winning that match so I am pretty disappointed.

'The atmosphere was fantastic and pushed me on, but I just wished I could have closed it out.

'I had chances and it was so close with points that could have gone either way but when she needs to hit a winner she does it.

'I've learnt I can compete with the best in the world'

Williams needed just 25 minutes to sweep to a one-set lead, 6-2, over but Watson fought back to take the second 4-6 before losing the decider 7-5.
