Aircrew memorial is £5k from target

DONATIONS big or small will still be welcomed for the Allied Aircrew Memorial project as it creeps closer to its fundraising target.

The memorial committee believes it is now within £5,000 of securing enough funds for the project, which is to honour those Allied aircrew who died in Bailiwick waters during the Second World War, but unexpected costs or setbacks could mean that they need to continue to drive for more support.

The latest donation of £610 has come from the Guernsey Taxi Owners' Federation, thanks to a collection from drivers who often wait for customers near the memorial site outside the airport.

Mike Snelling, committee member and air force representative, said they would welcome more financial support, however much people could spare, and if any money was left over at the end of the project it would be given to other good causes.

'We are confident we can make it,' he said.

'Any donation, big or small, will still be welcome, but do not worry, it won't be wasted.'
