Healthy ageing 'should be the focus of Slaws'

THOSE behind the Supported Living and Ageing Well Strategy (Slaws) have urged the public to 'have their say' and consider the consultation document regarding future options for dealing with an ageing population.

Their comments came as around 30 islanders attended a public meeting at St Sampson's High last night to discuss the strategy.

Deputy Peter Harwood, chairman of the working party, said Slaws would be one of the most important reports brought to the States this term.

'Tonight has been about gaining input from the public on what they want for their future.

'Around 2,000 people are currently receiving care and support from the States and that is only set to rise, which means something needs to be done to assess the current system.'

The Policy Council's Stephen Langford, who has been advising on the consultation document, said that Slaws was about 'focusing on all age groups'.

'It's about addressing more than basic healthcare needs and a small age group.

'We are looking at social care and support, transport needs, issues of loneliness, form-filling difficulties and how to easily access a decent meal to eat among many other things'.
