HMS Gleaner started working in the channel last week and has put out instruments to measure the tides and currents.

The vessel will stay for five weeks – a full lunar cycle.

Assistant harbour master Mike Gaudion said he understood the last survey was in 1988.

He said it was vital the charts were kept up to date.

'Things can change quite a lot,' he said.
