Farmers back tourism vision for the dairy

GUERNSEY'S dairy industry will fade away without a vision for the future, farmers have said, as they signalled support for transforming the island's dairy into a tourist attraction.

Those within the industry said promoting the Guernsey cow and produce could only be positive, but felt the challenges would come in turning the idea into reality.

Plans for the attraction were outlined by Commerce and Employment Minister Kevin Stewart, who said the vision featured a petting zoo, museum, guided tours and gift shop.

He wants to pursue the idea during the next political term. Dairy farmer and Guernsey Farmers' Association president James Watts, pictured, said the the island could be proud of the Guernsey breed and milk.

'I think it is something a lot of people when they come to visit want to know more about and there is definitely a lot of interest there so I think Deputy Stewart has a point.'
