A MAJOR bid to overhaul Sark's electoral system is on its way to the European Court of Human Rights, amid claims by campaigners that the island has become a 'single party state'.

Labelling the current set-up a 'feudocracy', Sark First members yesterday signed and submitted an application to the court, complaining that there had been a breach of the human rights convention.

Tony Le Lievre, one of three Sark First members to sign the application, said the current system allows for 'block voting' to ensure only certain candidates were elected to Chief Pleas.

Analysis shows that an organised group of 45% of the electors is enough to fill each of the 28 seats, according to Sark First, who say this is what happens in practice.
