High-risk drink drivers face tougher controls
CONVICTED drink-drivers who meet certain 'high risk' criteria will face tougher regulations before they are allowed back on the roads, under a newly-introduced High Risk Drink Driver Scheme.
The scheme will see drivers, whose potential dependency on alcohol presents a significant risk to road users, having to undergo a medical assessment before the Driver and Vehicle Licensing section of the Environment Department will consider re-issuing their driving licence – upon completion of their court-imposed disqualification from driving.
'While it does not automatically follow that people meeting the required criteria are alcohol dependent, their classification as a high-risk drink driver will help protect road users from any potential risk they pose when seeking to re-apply for their licence,' said Drug and Alcohol Strategy co-ordinator Andrea Nightingale (pictured).
